Harps

How are Stoney End harps made?
All 12 original Stoney End harp designs are handcrafted by founder Gary Stone and our talented staff in our renovated historic barn in Red Wing, Minnesota. Each harp starts with select aged Cherry, Walnut, or Maple. Wood is cut, shaped, and fitted using both power and hand tools, then glued and clamped. Once assembled, harps are finished with water-based lacquer, strung, and fitted with levers.

What makes Stoney End harps unique?

Can I have a harp shipped?
Yes! We ship worldwide. Shipping rates vary, so we recommend getting a shipping estimate before ordering.

What is a lever harp?
A lever harp has levers on individual strings that raise the pitch by a half-step, allowing key changes without retuning. Ideal for Celtic, folk, hymns, and more.

What is the difference between Celtic and Gothic harps?

  • Celtic harps: Inspired by the Brian Boru harp; higher string tension, metal-wound bass strings, wide dynamic range.

  • Gothic harps: Slender, light string tension, nylon bass strings; easier for beginners, yet still suitable for Celtic music.

How many sharpening levers do I need?

  • Partial levers: C and F strings for common Celtic keys (C, G, D).

  • Full levers: Play in multiple keys (Eb, Bb, F, C, D, G, A, E) without retuning.

Why tune a harp in Eb?
Eb tuning works well with full levers, allowing easy access to both flat and sharp keys while avoiding duplicate notes.

How do I order custom harp art?
Artist Cathy White creates harp artwork. Standard designs include roses, ivy, and Celtic knots, or she can create custom designs. Prices depend on size and complexity. Contact Cathy at 1-877-866-3936 or pusscraft@redwing.net.
