Our Story

Craftsmanship, tradition, and the joy of making music.

The story of Stoney End began in 1968 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The business was first established as Here Inc. by Lendrum (Len) and Su MacEachron. Len, a former patent attorney, quit his law career to focus full-time on his passion: folk music. Here Inc. exclusively made and sold dulcimers (including kits), dedicating their craftsmanship to this traditional folk instrument. Len and Su were well-known and loved members of the Minneapolis folk scene, helping to lay its early foundation in the Twin Cities by acting as a central hub for young musicians and hosting renowned jam sessions.

A new chapter began in 1984 when cabinet maker Gary Stone and his wife Eve purchased Here Inc. The Stones relocated the workshop fromMinneapolis to Red Wing, Minnesota, and Eve rechristened the company Stoney End—a combination of their family name and the rural road they lived on. Under their leadership, Stoney End grew and transformed into a thriving harp and folk instrument workshop.

It was during this time that Stoney End became known worldwide for its handcrafted harps, which Gary designed, built, and finished right in Red Wing. Their dedication to quality and tradition also led to a partnership with Hobgoblin Music, a well-respected UK folk music brand, allowing Stoney End to serve as a U.S. franchise and retail location for a wide variety of folk instruments and accessories, including banjos, whistles, and more.

In 2025, Grady and Nikki O’Gorman purchased Stoney End with a vision to carry forward this remarkable legacy. Grady, a trained luthier and engineer by trade, brings specialized expertise that will further enhance the handcrafted tradition of Stoney End. Nikki, leveraging her background in project management and strategic leadership, is focused on refining the retail experience and expanding the cultural events schedule. Through a continuing focus on excellent craftsmanship, concerts, events, and workshops hosted in the Stoney End Music Loft, they are committed to making Red Wing not only a home for world-class instruments, but also a gathering place for musicians and music lovers alike.

From dulcimers and harps to banjos and beyond, from local roots to global connections—Stoney End’s history is one of tradition, creativity, and community.

Our Harps

At Stoney End, our commitment to harps began shortly after Gary and Eve Stone purchased the company in 1984, transforming the business into a dedicated harp and folk instrument workshop. We’ve been handcrafting harps for over 40 years, blending time-honored tradition with thoughtful design.

Each instrument is carefully built in our Red Wing, Minnesota workshop, using select woods and skilled craftsmanship to create harps that are both beautiful and reliable.

We offer five unique collections—Gothic, Celtic, Cross Strung, Continental, and Music Therapy—each with its own character and sound. Every harp can be custom-ordered to suit your needs, with options for size, finish, and lever setup, ensuring a perfect fit for students, performers, and therapy settings alike.

Dulcimers

Our Dulcimers

Stoney End’s roots date back to 1968, when the company began as Here Inc., an exclusive maker of dulcimers. These instruments remain central to what we do today. Handcrafted with care and designed for a rich, resonant tone, our dulcimers are built to inspire both beginners and seasoned players.

We offer three styles: the Standard (27″), a classic choice for everyday playing; the Parlor (30″), with a deeper voice and fuller sound; and the Courting Dulcimer (27″ x 2), a unique double setup perfect for duets and teaching. Each instrument carries the tradition and craftsmanship that started our journey over five decades ago.

Our Mountain Banjos

At Stoney End, our mountain banjos are handcrafted for tone, playability, and durability, carrying on the tradition of classic American folk music. Each banjo is carefully built to bring out the bright, lively sound that makes this instrument a favorite among players of all levels.

We offer three styles: the Standard (27″) for full-bodied traditional play, the Short (24″) for a more compact, travel-friendly option, and the Tenor (27″) designed for rich, melodic tenor tones. Every banjo reflects the quality and craftsmanship that Stoney End has been known for since its founding in 1968—a tradition lasting over five decades.
