Harps: Your Questions Answered
Understanding the Harps We Offer
What is the difference between a Lever Harp and a Pedal Harp?
We specialize in Lever Harps (also known as Celtic or Folk Harps).
-
Lever Harps are diatonic and feature a small lever on individual strings. When engaged, the lever raises the pitch of that single string by a half-step, allowing for key changes and accidentals during performance. They are typically smaller, lighter, and more affordable.
-
Pedal Harps (found in orchestras) are fully chromatic and use seven foot pedals that simultaneously change the pitch of all strings of the same name (e.g., all C strings) by a half-step or a whole step. We do not make pedal harps.
What is a lever harp?
A lever harp has levers on individual strings that raise the pitch by a half-step, allowing key changes without needing to stop and retune the instrument. They are ideal for Celtic, folk, hymns, therapeutic music, and many other genres.
What is the difference between Celtic and Gothic harps?
-
Celtic Harps: Inspired by the Brian Boru harp; they feature higher string tension, metal-wound bass strings, and offer a wide dynamic range.
-
Gothic Harps: These are typically more slender and have lighter string tension, often utilizing nylon bass strings. They are easier for beginners to manage, yet still suitable for playing Celtic music and other genres.
How many sharpening levers do I need?
-
Full Levers: We primarily install full levers on our harps. This setup allows you to play in a wide variety of keys (such as E flat, B flat, F, C, D, G, A, E) without having to stop and retune, offering maximum versatility.
-
Partial Levers: You only install levers on the C and F strings, which covers the most common Celtic keys (C, G, D). While an option, most players choose full levers.
Why tune a harp in E flat?
Tuning a harp in E flat works optimally with a full set of levers. This setup allows for easy and efficient access to both sharp and flat keys while avoiding duplicate notes, providing maximum versatility for performance.
Craftsmanship & Uniqueness
How are Stoney End harps made?
All 17 original Stoney End harp designs are meticulously handcrafted by founder Gary Stone, owner Grady O’Gorman, and our talented staff in our renovated historic barn in Red Wing, Minnesota. Each harp begins with select aged Cherry, Walnut, or Maple. The wood is cut, shaped, and fitted using both power and hand tools, then expertly glued and clamped. Once assembled, harps are finished with water-based lacquer, strung, and fitted with precision levers.

We are committed to creating beautiful, handcrafted instruments backed by exceptional service. Our harps are intentionally designed for playability, exquisite tone, and accessibility, making quality instruments attainable for musicians of all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals.

Harp Care & Maintenance
How do I care for and clean my harp?
The best way to care for your harp is to regularly wipe down the wood and strings with a soft, 100% cotton cloth to remove dust and oil. Never use abrasive polishes, liquid cleaners, or solvents on the wood or levers, as they can damage the finish. Store your harp in a protective case and keep it away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
How often do I need to change my harp strings?
Strings can break at any time. As a general guideline, the higher-octave nylon strings should be changed every 6 to 12 months, and the bass wires should be changed every 1 to 2 years to maintain optimal tone. It’s always a good idea to keep a spare set of strings on hand!
Does Stoney End offer a warranty?
Yes, we stand by the quality of our craftsmanship with a 5-Year Limited Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty covers the original purchaser only and is non-transferrable. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, accidental damage, or issues arising from improper storage, humidity changes, or failure to follow maintenance guidelines.
