Instrument Care

At Stoney End Music

Every instrument we make—from harps to dulcimers to mountain banjos—is handcrafted in our Red Wing, Minnesota workshop with care and attention to detail. Proper maintenance ensures your instrument remains beautiful, playable, and resonant for years to come.

HARP CARE

Lever harps require regular tuning and gentle care to maintain their rich tone.

Tuning Tips:

  • Use a quality electronic or clip-on tuner to check each string regularly.

  • Tune slowly and carefully, adjusting levers first, then fine-tuning the string tension.

  • When tuning a floor harp, make sure it is on a stable, level surface to avoid unnecessary stress on the frame.

Maintenance:

  • Wipe the body and strings with a soft, dry cloth after each use.

  • Keep the harp away from direct sunlight, heaters, and extreme humidity changes.

  • Periodically check levers and tuning pins for smooth operation.

DULCIMER CARE

Our handcrafted dulcimers, built with decades of experience in Redwing, are designed for consistent tone and comfort.

Tuning & Care:

  • Always tune your dulcimer gradually, using a standard tuning wrench or electronic tuner.

  • Clean the fretboard and body with a soft, dry cloth; avoid water or harsh cleaners.

  • Store in a stable environment to protect the wood from cracking or warping.

Strings:

  • Check strings regularly for wear and replace as needed to maintain optimal tone.

Mountain Banjos

Stoney End mountain banjos are crafted for durability and bright, lively tone. Proper care helps keep them sounding their best.

TUNING TIPS:

    • Use an electronic or clip-on tuner to keep each string at the correct pitch.

    • Check the tension of the head occasionally; slight adjustments can keep the tone crisp and balanced.

MAINTENANCE:

    • Wipe down the head, neck, and strings after playing to remove oils and dust.

    • Keep your banjo away from extreme temperatures or humidity to preserve the wood and metal parts.

    • Periodically inspect tuning pegs, tailpiece, and bridge to ensure stability and proper alignment.
